Storm

The effect that climate change will exert on storm patterns is still an area of great uncertainty. There have been suggestions of an increase in storm frequency with warmer temperatures but there is no overall agreement on this, although some climate models do suggest an increase in storms for the UK.

Insurance companies are very concerned with the return period, intensity and location of storms, because of the great losses which are incurred. Climate change may increase the frequency and intensity of some of these natural hazards, and as a result, the cost of property insurance will rise to cover the costs of the increased risk.

Being prepared is the key to minimising the damage a storm can cause. Having sound buildings insurance in place is essential, but there are a number of things you can do to reduce the impact of severe weather:

  • As soon as a severe weather warning is issued for your area, make sure any shed doors are secured and any garden furniture or bikes are put away. Check around the garden for anything that could be lifted by a strong wind and cause damage.
  • Keep on top of your home maintenance, check your roof for loose tiles and make sure drains and guttering are clear of leaves and other debris. They need to be in good condition to withstand heavy rain, strong winds or lightening.
  • When bad weather has passed, if your home has been affected take photographs of the damage to your property and possessions for your insurer.
